Nashik Municipal Corporation to Expand Indira Gandhi Hospital for 2027 Kumbh Mela
NMC to Expand Indira Gandhi Hospital for 2027 Kumbh Mela

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has taken a significant step to enhance healthcare infrastructure in preparation for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, scheduled for 2027. In a major development, the municipal body has decided to undertake a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the existing Indira Gandhi Hospital building located in the Panchavati area of Nashik city.

Approval and Funding for Hospital Renovation

The General Body of the Nashik Municipal Corporation has officially granted its approval for this crucial project, allocating a budget of Rs 6 crore for the renovation work. Following this approval, NMC has initiated the tender process to select contractors for the expansion and modernization of the hospital facility. This move underscores the administration's commitment to upgrading medical services ahead of the massive religious gathering.

Increasing Bed Capacity and Adding ICU Facilities

Currently, Indira Gandhi Hospital operates with a capacity of only 60 beds. As part of the renovation plan, NMC officials have announced that this number will be increased to 100 beds. This expansion is specifically designed to accommodate the anticipated influx of devotees during the Kumbh Mela. In a significant upgrade, the hospital will also establish a new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with 20 beds, which will be located in the basement of the building. Presently, the hospital lacks any ICU facilities, making this addition a vital improvement for emergency medical care.

Preparing for the 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela

The upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2027 is expected to draw an enormous crowd, with estimates suggesting around 5 crore devotees will visit Nashik city. This projection marks a substantial increase from the previous Kumbh Mela in 2015, which attracted approximately 2 crore visitors. The three major Amrit Snans, or holy baths, are scheduled to take place between August and September 2027, further highlighting the need for robust healthcare infrastructure.

Additional Healthcare Initiatives for Kumbh Mela

Beyond the renovation of Indira Gandhi Hospital, Nashik Municipal Corporation is also planning to set up a separate 100-bed hospital at the Tapovan area of the city. Officials revealed that a building already exists at this location, which is traditionally used during the Kumbh Mela. An additional investment of around Rs 6 crore is being allocated for various works to make this facility operational. Tapovan is particularly significant as it houses Sadhugram, the designated accommodation area for sadhus during the religious event.

NMC officials emphasized that the expansion and renovation of Indira Gandhi Hospital are being undertaken with the primary objective of catering to the healthcare needs of all devotees attending the Kumbh Mela. The enhanced medical facilities will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the millions expected to participate in this grand religious congregation.
