PGI Chandigarh Inaugurates Specialized Cardiac Emergency Unit
In a significant move to combat heart attack fatalities, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) in Chandigarh has officially launched a dedicated Cardiac Emergency at its Advanced Cardiac Centre (ACC). This initiative, which became operational on Monday, is designed to address critical delays that have historically plagued the treatment of cardiac patients, particularly during the crucial "golden hour" following a heart attack.
Addressing Critical Delays in Heart Attack Treatment
Medical experts have long emphasized that the first two hours after a heart attack are vital for survival and recovery, yet many patients at PGI have faced delays of four to five hours before reaching a cardiologist. These delays were primarily due to the fragmented emergency pathways, which required patients to be shifted between different departments, contributing to higher mortality rates. The new Cardiac Emergency unit aims to eliminate these bottlenecks by providing a streamlined, direct pathway for cardiac cases.
Features of the New Cardiac Emergency Unit
The newly established unit is equipped with 20 dedicated beds specifically for acute cardiac cases, ensuring that patients receive immediate and specialized care upon arrival. Prof Rajesh Vijayvergia, the in-charge of the Cardiac Emergency, highlighted the unit's capabilities, stating, "With the 20 beds in place and additional manpower being arranged, we will be able to manage the emergency load effectively." This setup allows cardiac patients to bypass the general medicine emergency, enabling cardiologists to intervene promptly.
Expected Impact and Initial Response
On its opening day, the facility received its first four patients, and officials anticipate that the number of cases will increase as awareness of the new system spreads. The streamlined pathway is projected to significantly reduce the time-to-treatment for life-threatening cardiac events, ensuring that patients are met by specialists as soon as they reach the hospital. This proactive approach is expected to enhance survival rates and improve overall outcomes for heart attack victims.
By centralizing cardiac emergency services, PGI Chandigarh is taking a crucial step toward modernizing its healthcare infrastructure and addressing a long-standing gap in patient care.
