Rajasthan Police Constable Undergoes Robotic Surgery for Rare Trauma-Induced Hernia
In a remarkable medical case, Head Constable Rampal (50) of the Rajasthan Police developed a rare bilateral hernia following injuries sustained in a road accident while on duty. The incident occurred in Raja Park on November 30, 2025, when he was struck by a truck. Medical experts noted that hernia resulting from trauma is an uncommon occurrence, making this case particularly unusual.
Advanced Robotic Procedure at SMS Hospital
The constable received treatment at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, where doctors performed an advanced robotic surgery on February 28. The operation lasted approximately two hours and was conducted through three small incisions, each measuring 8 mm, which significantly minimized surgical trauma. This minimally invasive approach facilitated a quicker recovery, and the patient was discharged on March 3.
Hospital sources confirmed that the hernia was directly linked to the injuries from the road accident. Officials highlighted this procedure as a notable achievement for the government hospital, which has now surpassed 300 robotic surgeries since the system was installed in the general surgery department.

Dr. Mrinal Joshi, Superintendent of SMS Hospital, emphasized that this milestone marks a significant advancement in public healthcare. "This is a major milestone, and no other government hospital in Rajasthan has performed as many robotic procedures so far," he stated. Dr. Joshi added that robotic surgery offers substantial benefits to patients, including reduced blood loss and faster recovery times compared to traditional methods.

Doctors at SMS Hospital detailed the advantages of robotic-assisted surgery over conventional laparoscopy. The robotic system provides a clearer and more stable view of internal organs, enhancing surgical precision. Additionally, the instrument arms can rotate 360 degrees, allowing surgeons to access areas that were previously difficult to reach with standard laparoscopic tools. This technological edge improves outcomes and patient safety.
Investment in Robotic Technology
SMS Medical College invested significantly in this advanced technology three years ago, procuring two robotic systems at a cost of Rs 25 crore each. One system is dedicated to general surgery, while the other is used for urology procedures. This investment underscores the hospital's commitment to adopting cutting-edge medical technologies to enhance patient care and treatment efficacy.
