Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences Grapples With Severe Infrastructure Failures
Patients, attendants, and medical staff at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi have voiced serious concerns regarding persistent and dangerous infrastructure issues at one of Jharkhand's largest government-run healthcare facilities. The hospital, which serves hundreds of patients from across Jharkhand and neighboring Bihar, is reportedly plagued by multiple structural challenges that compromise safety and functionality.
Widespread Structural Deterioration Across Hospital Wards
From damaged flooring and leaking roofs to rusted and broken stair railings, the problems at RIMS are extensive and affect numerous areas of the facility. Concerns have been raised across several wards, as well as in both outpatient and inpatient departments, with both patients and staff highlighting the rapidly deteriorating condition of the institution.
Ravi Kumar, an attendant from Bero in Ranchi, described the practical difficulties created by the infrastructure failures. "Damaged floors in many parts of the building make it extremely difficult to move patients on wheelchairs and stretchers," he explained. "We have to navigate carefully around broken sections, which slows down critical patient transport."
Broken Railings Pose Direct Safety Threats
Near the surgery department, stair railings have reportedly remained broken for over a year, creating hazardous conditions for everyone using the facility. A ward boy, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed the extent of the danger. "In several areas, railings are rusted and hanging loose, posing serious risks to both patients and staff," he said. "The damaged flooring adds to the challenge, forcing us to carefully navigate undamaged patches while transporting patients for tests and back to wards."
Roshni Devi, a resident of Bhagalpur in Bihar who has been staying at the hospital for over six weeks for her daughter's lung ailment, expressed constant worry about safety. "I fear my daughter might fall while using the stairs, as the railings are rusted and completely unusable," she said. "For a major government hospital that serves so many people, this level of neglect is unacceptable."
Hospital Administration Responds With Renovation Plan
Professor Shio Priye, head of the anaesthesia department and estate officer at RIMS, confirmed that steps are being taken to address the infrastructure issues. He told media that the health department has floated a tender worth over Rs 200 crore through the Jharkhand State Building Construction Corporation Limited to undertake comprehensive renovation work.
"A contractor has been finalised, and renovation work has already begun in the outer areas of the hospital," Professor Priye stated. "Roofs and drains are being repaired ahead of the monsoon season to prevent further water damage. Work on damaged floors will follow, and the entire project is expected to be completed within a few months, which should significantly ease the difficulties faced by patients and medical staff."
The infrastructure problems at RIMS highlight broader challenges facing government healthcare facilities in the region, where aging infrastructure often struggles to meet growing patient demands. The hospital serves as a critical healthcare hub for residents of Jharkhand and neighboring Bihar, making its operational efficiency and safety standards particularly important for regional healthcare delivery.
