Karnataka Government Sanctions Rs 48 Crore for New District Hospital in Kollegal
The Karnataka state government has taken a significant step towards improving healthcare infrastructure by releasing Rs 48 crore for the first phase of construction of a new district hospital in Kollegal, located in Chamarajanagar district. This initiative aims to address the growing healthcare needs of the region, particularly for residents in forest-border areas.
Details of the New Hospital Project
The new district hospital will be constructed on a 5-acre plot at Mudigunda in Kollegal. The government has planned a state-of-the-art facility with a capacity of 350 beds, designed to offer comprehensive multi-speciality services. Key features of the hospital will include three major operation theatres, an intensive care unit (ICU), a dedicated dialysis unit, a blood bank, and an outpatient wing. This development is expected to significantly enhance surgical and critical care capabilities in the area.
Addressing Healthcare Gaps in Forest-Border Regions
The primary objective of this new facility is to extend quality health services to residents living near the forest areas of Hanur, Kollegal, and Yelandur. Currently, the region relies on a 150-bed sub-division government hospital that was established four decades ago. Over the years, this facility has faced immense pressure due to a rising number of patients, highlighting the urgent need for upgraded infrastructure.
Background and Government Response
The decision to build the new district hospital came after persistent demands from elected representatives, including MLAs, who advocated for better healthcare facilities in Kollegal. This move was further necessitated by the upgrade of the existing district hospital in Chamarajanagar headquarters to the government referral hospital of the Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS), creating a gap in local healthcare services.
Progress and Future Steps
All preliminary processes for the hospital construction, including land identification and transfer, were completed in September of last year. With the release of Rs 48 crore, the first phase of construction is set to commence shortly. Chamarajanagar District Health Officer S Chidambar confirmed the fund allocation, while Kollegal MLA A R Krishnamurthy expressed optimism that work on the hospital will begin soon, marking a pivotal moment for public health in the region.
