Security Guard Steps In to Assist Doctors at Bihar Hospital Amid Critical Staff Shortage
A severe shortage of medical personnel was starkly exposed at the Bagaha sub-divisional hospital in West Champaran district, Bihar, when a security guard was compelled to assist doctors in stitching the injuries of road accident victims. This extraordinary situation unfolded on Monday amid an unexpected and overwhelming rush of patients at the healthcare facility.
Details of the Road Accident and Victims
The injured individuals were identified as Wasim Akhtar, a pickup van driver, and Surendra Pasi. Both are residents of Jatahan Bhairganj Bazaar, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Jatahan police station area in neighboring Uttar Pradesh.
According to Wasim Akhtar's account, the accident occurred near a gas agency at Shastri Nagar on National Highway-727, which runs along the crucial Bagaha–Bettiah main road. "A tempo and our pickup van collided head-on, causing our vehicle to overturn on the road. Two of us sustained injuries, while the tempo driver fled the scene with his vehicle," Akhtar explained.
Hospital Overwhelmed by Multiple Casualties
Eyewitnesses promptly rushed the injured men to the nearest medical facility, the Bagaha sub-divisional hospital. However, the hospital was simultaneously receiving multiple accident cases, creating a critical patient overload. The institution faced an acute crisis with no dressers or operating theatre staff available, compounded by significant shortages of nurses and doctors.
In this desperate scenario, a security guard stationed at the hospital stepped forward to provide basic assistance. Under the supervision of available medical professionals, the guard helped with fundamental suturing tasks to manage the influx of injured patients.
Hospital Administration Cites Systemic Manpower Deficiencies
Deputy Superintendent Ashok Kumar Tiwari defended this unconventional arrangement, pointing to chronic manpower shortages plaguing the hospital. "Neither OT staff nor dressers have been appointed at this hospital so far. We are also experiencing shortages of GNM staff and doctors. When more than five accident victims arrived almost simultaneously, the guard provided support as an emergency measure," Tiwari stated.
This incident underscores the broader challenges facing healthcare infrastructure in certain regions, where resource constraints force unconventional solutions during medical emergencies. The episode has raised serious questions about staffing adequacy and emergency preparedness at public health facilities in the area.
