Tamil Nadu Announces Major Recruitment Drive for Healthcare Professionals
In a significant boost to the state's healthcare infrastructure, the Tamil Nadu health department is set to issue appointment orders for 250 specialists across five critical medical specialties, along with 1,100 doctors for various primary health centres and secondary hospitals. Health Minister Ma Subramanian made this announcement on Saturday, highlighting the government's commitment to strengthening medical services.
Details of the Specialist Recruitment
The recruitment drive will focus on filling vacancies in five key specialties: radiology, gynaecology, forensic medicine, geriatrics, and cardiothoracic surgery. This move aims to address the shortage of specialized medical professionals in government facilities across the state.
Health Minister Ma Subramanian provided specific numbers, stating that the state has already appointed 182 gynaecologists, 37 radiologists, 24 forensic medicine experts, six geriatricians, and one cardiothoracic surgeon directly to fill urgent vacancies. This direct appointment process deviates from the usual practice of posting service candidates only after they complete their postgraduation, indicating the urgency of the need.
Recruitment Process and Applications
The medical recruitment board received an overwhelming response, with more than 25,000 applications submitted for the 1,100 doctor vacancies in various government healthcare facilities. Tests have been conducted as part of the selection process, and the list of qualified candidates is expected to be released by the board soon.
This recruitment initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance healthcare delivery in Tamil Nadu. The minister noted that the state has filled more than 30% of healthcare vacancies over the past five years, demonstrating ongoing progress in staffing government medical institutions.
Additional Appointments and Distribution
During the announcement, Minister Subramanian also distributed appointment orders to other healthcare professionals, including:
- 115 medical officers
- 83 ophthalmic assistants, with 75 allocated to public health services
- 75 lab technicians
This comprehensive recruitment drive underscores the Tamil Nadu government's focus on improving access to quality healthcare by addressing staffing gaps at multiple levels, from specialized doctors to support staff in primary and secondary health facilities.
