Telangana DCA Implements Bulk SMS Alert System for Substandard Drug Recalls
Hyderabad: In a significant move to enhance pharmaceutical safety, the Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana has officially launched a comprehensive bulk SMS alert system. This innovative digital platform is designed to provide immediate notifications to pharmacies and wholesalers across the state regarding medicines identified as not of standard quality (NSQ), commonly known as substandard drugs.
Instant Notification for Rapid Action
Under this newly established system, the DCA will send instant SMS alerts to all registered medical shops in Telangana as soon as a specific medicine is officially declared NSQ by the state's drugs control laboratory. The alerts will contain clear instructions directing retailers to immediately halt the sale and distribution of the identified drug, thereby preventing it from reaching patients and potentially compromising their health.
According to department officials, medicines classified as NSQ are those that fail critical laboratory quality tests, including:
- Assay tests to verify active ingredient content
- Disintegration tests to ensure proper breakdown in the body
- Dissolution tests to confirm appropriate absorption rates
Such substandard medications may not work effectively in treating diseases and could pose significant risks to patient safety due to inadequate therapeutic effects or unexpected side effects.
Strengthening Drug Safety Monitoring
The digital alert platform represents a major advancement in pharmaceutical regulation, enabling the rapid recall of substandard medicines from the market. By informing all stakeholders—including retail pharmacies and wholesalers—at the earliest possible stage, the system is expected to facilitate quicker action to remove unsafe drugs from circulation throughout Telangana.
