Telangana Achieves Superior Maternal and Child Health Outcomes
Hyderabad: Telangana has demonstrated remarkable progress in maternal and child health, outperforming the national average across several critical indicators, as revealed by the recently published state socio-economic outlook for 2026. The data highlights the state's effective healthcare strategies and sustained investments in public health infrastructure.
Key Health Indicators Show Significant Improvement
The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in Telangana stands at an impressive 43 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, which is substantially lower than the national average of 88. This reduction reflects the state's focused efforts on enhancing maternal care and reducing pregnancy-related complications.
Similarly, the infant mortality rate (IMR) in Telangana is recorded at 18 per 1,000 live births, compared to the national figure of 25. The under-five mortality rate is 22 against 29 nationally, while the neonatal mortality rate is 14, lower than India's average of 19. These statistics underscore the state's success in improving child survival rates and overall pediatric healthcare.
Comprehensive Healthcare Programs Drive Success
The report attributes these positive outcomes to sustained investments in maternal healthcare and a lifecycle approach to women's health. Programs such as Aarogya Mahila have been instrumental in expanding screening services for cancer, micronutrient deficiencies, and reproductive health issues across 372 healthcare facilities. To date, approximately 28.3 lakh women have been screened under this initiative, ensuring early detection and timely intervention for various health conditions.
In addition to screening services, the government has implemented targeted nutrition interventions to address anaemia and malnutrition. These efforts include monitoring gestational weight gain and providing specialized nutritional support to pregnant women and new mothers. Furthermore, mental health screening has been integrated into routine maternal care, offering crucial support during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Enhanced Antenatal Care and High-Risk Pregnancy Management
Improved maternal outcomes are closely linked to strengthened antenatal care (ANC) protocols in Telangana. The state aims to ensure that 95% of pregnancies are registered early, within the first trimester, and that at least 90% of pregnant women receive four or more ANC visits. This proactive approach helps in identifying potential risks early and providing appropriate medical care.
Efforts to manage high-risk pregnancies have positioned Telangana among the top-performing states in India. Standard operating procedures have been implemented for 20 identified high-risk conditions, ensuring consistent and effective care. The state has also expanded access to diagnostic services, with 234 TIFFA scan machines installed across 69 secondary and tertiary healthcare facilities. Between April and December 2025, over 60,000 pregnant women availed themselves of these advanced diagnostic services, facilitating better pregnancy management and outcomes.
Additional Health Metrics Highlight Progress
The total fertility rate (TFR) in Telangana is also lower at 1.5, compared to the national figure of 1.9, indicating successful family planning and reproductive health initiatives. Institutional deliveries in the state have reached an impressive 99.9%, significantly higher than the national average of 88.6%. This high rate of institutional deliveries ensures that births occur in safe, medically supervised environments, reducing risks for both mothers and newborns.
Overall, Telangana's achievements in maternal and child health reflect a comprehensive and well-executed public health strategy. The state's commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in healthcare services sets a benchmark for other regions to follow, contributing to the broader goal of enhancing health outcomes across India.
