Tamil Nadu Government Doctors to Escalate Protest with Hunger Strike
The Federation of Government Doctors' Associations in Tamil Nadu has declared a significant escalation in its ongoing protest, announcing plans to commence a hunger strike in Chennai starting March 5. This move intensifies the long-standing demands for a pay increase and other critical service-related issues, including timely promotions that have been pending for an extended period.
Core Demands and Historical Context
At the heart of the protest are several key demands that the doctors have been advocating for persistently. Primarily, they are calling for the implementation of Government Order (GO) 354, which was issued during the tenure of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. This order is seen as crucial for addressing various administrative and service conditions for government doctors in the state.
Additionally, the federation is demanding a special allowance of ₹3,000 for doctors working across all Primary Health Centers (PHCs). This allowance aims to recognize and compensate for the challenging working conditions and essential services provided by these medical professionals in rural and underserved areas.
Failed Negotiations and Escalation to Fast Unto Death
Despite holding multiple discussions with Health Minister Ma Subramaniam and other senior health department officials, the doctors have expressed frustration over the lack of concrete solutions. According to Dr. A. Ramalingam, the convenor of the federation, the authorities had promised assistance during these talks, but no actionable outcomes have materialized.
"We held a series of protests, including a 48-hour fast, to highlight our grievances. However, no resolution ensued from these efforts," Dr. Ramalingam stated. "Consequently, we have decided to escalate our protest to a fast unto death, beginning March 5 in Chennai, to draw urgent attention to our demands."
Call for Chief Minister's Intervention
In a direct appeal, Dr. Ramalingam emphasized the need for immediate action from the highest levels of the state government. "We urge the Chief Minister's urgent intervention to address these long-pending issues. The well-being of government doctors is integral to the healthcare system in Tamil Nadu, and resolving these matters is critical for maintaining medical services across the state," he added.
