Trichy Leprosy Center's Decay: Gandhi Banner Masks Neglect in Century-Old Building

A banner featuring Mahatma Gandhi and his message on eradicating leprosy stands prominently in front of the deputy director of medical services (Leprosy) office in Trichy, located opposite the Central bus stand. However, this inspiring display barely conceals the severe decay and neglect evident in the office building and its premises, which fall far short of expectations for a health center serving hundreds of patients.

Dilapidated Infrastructure and Security Concerns

The building, believed to be nearly a century old, is in a dilapidated state, lacking proper fencing or gates. Near the entrance, the area reeks of urine, and with no security measures in place, the facility has become a haven for anti-social activities during nighttime hours. Food waste dumped from nearby eateries, liquor bottles, cigarette packets, and various litter are commonly seen scattered across the premises.

While the main building, which houses treatment, diagnosis, and other essential services, is itself in poor condition, an additional unused and broken shady structure within the compound attracts miscreants, especially after dark. Employees report that such individuals gain entry through a broken gate facing the bus stand or by jumping over the low fencing.

Sanitation and Operational Challenges

The center also suffers from a lack of sanitation workers, relying instead on scavengers who occasionally collect discarded bottles to clear some of the waste. "There was a post of a sanitation worker, but it got lapsed as it was not filled," a staff member explained. Even the bathrooms are in poor condition, and staff have noted recent problems with water supply, further complicating daily operations.

Despite these challenges, the facility provides crucial services, including:

  • Treatment and diagnosis for leprosy patients
  • Distribution of essential items such as special chappals
  • Organization of screening camps across the region
  • Stocking all tablets meant for distribution

Health and Safety Risks for Staff and Patients

Staff members express significant concerns about health and safety risks. "It is terrifying to see snakes and rats fall through the roof. We are also worried that unrestricted entry could lead to theft," another employee shared. The center serves patients from four districts: Trichy, Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Karur, highlighting its regional importance.

Repeated Appeals for Renovation or Relocation

Employees have repeatedly raised the issue with successive district collectors, seeking either renovation or relocation of the facility. A Shanthi, deputy director of medical services (Leprosy), stated, "I represented the issue and requested the then district collector, Pradeep Kumar." A senior district official has assured that the matter will be looked into, but concrete actions remain pending.

This situation underscores the urgent need for infrastructure improvements to ensure the center can continue providing vital healthcare services effectively and safely.
