A tragic incident unfolded in Chennai's Aminjikarai area, where a 25-year-old woman allegedly murdered her three-month-old daughter before taking her own life. The deceased have been identified as Dharini and her infant daughter Shreya.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, Dharini's husband Praveen, 29, operates a tattoo studio in Nungambakkam. The family resided in a private apartment in Ayyavu Colony, Aminjikarai, along with Praveen's mother Veena, 54, and Dharini's mother Radhika, 51.
On Friday, Praveen left for work as usual. Later in the evening, Radhika accompanied her other daughter, Kavya, to a private hospital in Aminjikarai after Kavya complained of stomach pain. At that time, Dharini, baby Shreya, and Veena were at home.
When Radhika returned later that night, she made a horrifying discovery. She found Dharini hanging from the ceiling in her room, while the infant lay unconscious on the floor with froth around her mouth. Radhika immediately raised an alarm, prompting family members and neighbors to rush the victims to a private hospital. Doctors there referred them to KMC Hospital, where both were declared dead on arrival.
Police Investigation
The Aminjikarai police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Preliminary inquiries suggest that Dharini had been undergoing treatment for depression since childhood, and her condition reportedly worsened after the birth of her child.
Investigators are currently examining whether the infant died due to strangulation or poisoning. They are awaiting post-mortem reports to determine the exact cause of death.
Authorities are also questioning family members to understand the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.
