CSIR-NBRI Develops Nano-Curcumin Technology to Boost Absorption and Health Benefits
CSIR-NBRI Patents Nano-Curcumin for Better Absorption

Lucknow: The CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) has obtained an Indian patent for a novel technology that markedly improves the effectiveness of curcumin, the primary medicinal compound in turmeric, thereby enhancing human health.

Overcoming Curcumin's Absorption Limitation

Turmeric has long been a fundamental component in Indian households and Ayurveda, valued for its capacity to strengthen immunity, reduce inflammation, and aid healing. However, scientists observed that curcumin in its natural state provides limited benefits because the human body absorbs only a small fraction of it.

To address this challenge, NBRI researchers have created a nanoformulation where curcumin is broken down into extremely tiny particles. This process boosts its absorption in the body, enhances stability, and increases its medicinal impact. “The human body cannot efficiently absorb curcumin in its natural form, so our new formulation enhances its absorption and effectiveness several times,” stated Ajit Kumar Shasany, NBRI director.

Safe and Natural Formulation

The formulation is herbal, food-grade, and designed for oral consumption. It does not involve metals or synthetic chemicals, making it safer than many existing drug delivery systems. Researchers found that the improved curcumin exhibits stronger antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps the body combat cell damage caused by stress and pollution, reduces internal inflammation, and strengthens immunity.

Gut Health and Disease Prevention

The technology also supports gut health by improving the balance of beneficial bacteria in the digestive system, a key factor in overall well-being. Senior principal scientist B N Singh, who led the research, said the formulation could aid in preventing and managing conditions linked to inflammation, weak immunity, and lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and digestive disorders.

Potential Applications and Commercialization

This innovation could lead to more effective turmeric-based products, including dietary supplements, fortified foods, and plant-based medicines, boosting demand for scientifically validated, natural healthcare solutions. NBRI now hopes the technology will attract industry partnerships and lead to the commercial production of safer, more effective turmeric-based health products.
