Doctor Gets 2.5 Years Prison for Supplying Ketamine Linked to Matthew Perry's Death
Doctor Sentenced for Ketamine Linked to Matthew Perry Death

A medical professional from California has been handed a prison sentence for his role in a case connected to the tragic death of beloved actor Matthew Perry. On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, Dr. Salvador Plasencia was sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison. His crime was the illegal distribution of the powerful sedative ketamine, a drug linked to the overdose that ended Perry's life in October 2023.

Exploiting a Patient's Vulnerability for Profit

Court proceedings revealed a disturbing narrative of exploitation. Matthew Perry, who had been legally prescribed ketamine for depression treatment, reportedly approached Dr. Plasencia after his regular physician refused to increase his dosage. Prosecutors argued that Plasencia, who operated an urgent-care clinic near Los Angeles, was fully aware of Perry's long-standing battle with addiction.

Instead of offering help, he chose to exploit the actor's medical vulnerability for financial gain. Shockingly, internal communications presented in court showed Plasencia referring to Perry as a "moron" who could be used for money in a text to another doctor. A prosecution memo starkly stated that the defendant sought to exploit Perry's condition for profit, rather than providing the care he desperately needed.

A Guilty Plea and Pleas for Leniency

Dr. Salvador Plasencia had entered a guilty plea in July 2025 to four felony counts of illegal ketamine distribution. It is important to note that he was not charged with providing the specific dose that caused Perry's death on October 28, 2023. Following the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped five other charges against him.

During sentencing, his defense team pleaded for mercy. They portrayed Plasencia as a doctor who rose from poverty and was cherished by his patients, several of whom sent supportive testimonials to the court. His lawyers acknowledged the illegal sales as a "reckless" act and the gravest mistake of his life, expressing his profound remorse.

They argued that a prison term was unnecessary, citing that he has already lost his medical license, his clinic, and his entire career. They also mentioned intense media scrutiny and threats that forced his family to relocate out of state for their safety.

A Family's Presence and Lasting Legacy

The sentencing hearing was attended by Matthew Perry's mother, Suzanne Perry, and his stepfather, noted "Dateline" journalist Keith Morrison. Their presence underscored the personal tragedy behind the legal case.

Matthew Perry, who passed away at age 54, had been candid about his struggles with addiction, which began during his peak fame on the iconic NBC sitcom Friends. He won hearts globally with his portrayal of the sarcastic yet lovable Chandler Bing, starring alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer from 1994 to 2004.

Other individuals who pleaded guilty in connection with this case are scheduled to be sentenced in the upcoming months. This case highlights the severe legal consequences for medical professionals who violate their oath and the law, especially when dealing with controlled substances and vulnerable individuals.
