Doctors Save Airport Worker's Eye After Severe Injury

Doctors have successfully treated a rare and severe eye injury case, saving the eye of a 44-year-old airport worker after two large glass fragments from his shattered spectacles penetrated his left eye during a workplace accident.

The Incident

Sachin Nikam was rushed to the emergency department after a luggage belt strap snapped and struck his face while he was transferring baggage at the airport. The impact shattered his spectacles, with several glass fragments piercing his left eye and eyelid. He arrived at the hospital in severe pain, with profuse bleeding and nausea.

Immediate Response

Recognising the seriousness of the injury, the Emergency Department team immediately assessed and stabilised the patient. Urgent eye protection and medical management were initiated, while specialist ophthalmology support was mobilised without delay. On examination, doctors discovered extensive damage to the eye and surrounding structures. The injury had caused rupture of the eyelid margin at two locations, and deep corneoscleral tears involving the transparent cornea and the white outer coat of the eye. There was significant internal damage, including loss of vitreous gel and uveal tissue from within the eye. The natural lens of the eye could not be identified due to the severity of the trauma.

Emergency Surgery

The emergency team immediately commenced wound care, administered antibiotics, protected the eye, completed urgent pre-operative investigations, and facilitated rapid transfer to the operating theatre. Within minutes of arrival, the patient was prepared for emergency surgery. During the surgery, doctors removed the embedded glass fragments and reconstructed the damaged eye and eyelid. More than 30 sutures were required to repair the extensive injuries. Damaged tissue was managed to preserve the structural integrity of the eye and maximise the possibility of visual recovery. Doctors noted that without immediate emergency intervention and surgical repair, the patient could have suffered permanent visual loss, severe infection, irreversible structural damage to the eye and significant cosmetic deformity.

Expert Comments

Speaking about the case, Dr Jimit Choudhary, Consultant- Ophthalmologist, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, said, "This was an extremely severe penetrating eye injury with a high risk of permanent vision loss. In such cases, every minute is critical because delays can lead to irreversible damage, infection and loss of the eye itself. The patient reached us in time, allowing our emergency and ophthalmology teams to act swiftly. Our immediate priority was to preserve the eye, repair the extensive damage and provide the best possible opportunity for visual recovery."

Dr Vivek Talaulikar, Senior Director and Chief Operating Officer – Western Region, Max Healthcare said, "This case highlights how timely intervention, clinical expertise and coordinated teamwork can influence outcomes when every minute counts. Emergencies cannot be planned. But during an injury or sudden disturbance in any vital function of the body, patients and families need the reassurance that expert care is immediately available. The Emergency Department of Nanavati Max Hospital is built for such critical situations, with 24x7 consultant-led care, rapid triage, advanced bedside diagnostic support and seamless access to multidisciplinary specialists."

Recovery and Follow-Up

The patient has been recovering well and is now able to see light movements and recognise hand movements. His eye movements remain normal, which is an important sign of recovery. The patient will continue to remain under close follow-up and may require additional procedures, including secondary lens implantation and retinal treatment, depending on his recovery and future clinical findings.
