In a significant move to fill vacant professional course seats, the Gujarat state admission committee has announced a fresh common admission round for both medical and dental programmes. This decision comes after the regular admission process concluded with numerous seats remaining unfilled, prompting an extension of the national deadline for medical admissions.
Extension of Deadline Triggers New Admission Process
The earlier admission cycle for medical and dental courses officially ended on November 19. However, the process left a substantial number of seats vacant, with 57 medical seats and 33 dental seats across the state's institutions going unclaimed. Initially, with the medical admission deadline lapsed, the committee had started a separate process exclusively for the 33 vacant dental seats.
The scenario changed when the deadline for medical admissions received an extension up to December 31. Seizing this opportunity, the admission committee decided to halt the ongoing dental-only admission process. Instead, it opted to restart a unified admission round for both the medical and dental courses together, ensuring a streamlined approach.
Revised Schedule and Key Financial Conditions
According to the freshly released schedule, aspiring candidates must act swiftly. Those seeking admission to these vacant seats are required to deposit a security amount of Rs 3 lakh with the admission committee. The window for this deposit is set between December 18 and 22.
Only candidates who successfully submit this security deposit will be eligible to participate in the subsequent choice-filling process. The choice-filling, where candidates select their preferred colleges and courses, is scheduled to take place from December 22 to 24.
The committee has issued a clear warning regarding the security deposit. Candidates who are allotted a seat in this round but subsequently fail to confirm their admission by joining the allotted college will forfeit the entire Rs 3 lakh security deposit. This measure is intended to ensure serious participation.
Potential for Further Rounds and Historical Context
Officials have indicated that this may not be the final round for dental admissions. If dental seats continue to remain vacant after the conclusion of this common round, the committee plans to conduct a separate admission round exclusively for dental courses between January 1 and 10.
This development marks a notable event in the state's admission history. It is the first instance where an extension of the national medical admission deadline has directly led to the scheduling of an additional round specifically aimed at filling both medical and dental seats in Gujarat. This move highlights the committee's effort to maximise seat occupancy and provide opportunities to eligible candidates.
