A sharp dip in temperatures across North Karnataka, particularly in Hubballi, has prompted serious health warnings from medical professionals. With foggy and cold mornings becoming the norm, residents braving the chill for their daily exercise are being cautioned about significant cardiovascular risks.
Doctors Sound Alarm on Cold-Induced Heart Stress
Health experts report a noticeable rise in patients suffering from cold-related symptoms like severe headaches, body pain, cough, and fever. Dr. GB Sattur, a noted physician and diabetologist, explained to TOI that even mild cold spells in Karnataka can place extra strain on the heart and circulatory system. This is especially dangerous for cardiac patients, senior citizens, and individuals with hypertension or diabetes.
"Exposure to cold causes blood vessels to constrict, which leads to a spike in blood pressure and forces the heart to work harder," Dr. Sattur stated. He further warned that cold weather can increase blood thickness, elevating the risk of heart attacks and strokes in vulnerable people.
Rethinking the Morning Walk: Timing is Crucial
While affirming the benefits of walking, Dr. Sattur emphasized that timing is critical for safety. He strongly advised against early morning walks between 5:30 AM and 8:00 AM, when body temperature is at its lowest and blood pressure typically peaks, creating maximum cardiac stress.
"The safest windows for outdoor walking are during late morning from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, or in the early evening between 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM when temperatures are relatively warmer and more stable," he recommended. Dr. Sattur also advised walkers to maintain a moderate pace to avoid breathlessness.
Hospitals See Increased Patient Inflow
The health advisory comes as hospitals witness heightened activity. Dr. Ishwar Hasabi, Superintendent of KIMS Hospital, confirmed that extreme cold can trigger heart conditions like vasospasm. While no severe cases have been reported yet, the season is causing complications for those with existing heart ailments.
"The situation is not alarming, but we are seeing its effects," Dr. Hasabi said. He revealed that 7-8 patients are being tested daily in catheterization labs, and the 60-bed cardiology department is currently operating at full capacity. The hospital has added extra beds as a precautionary measure.
Walkers Heed Advice, Adjust Schedules
The medical warnings are being taken seriously by the local fitness community. Siddu Mogalishettar, Secretary of the Nrupatunga Betta Walkers' Association, reported that many members have already altered their routines to avoid the harsh early morning cold and are diligently following expert advice.
Essential Winter Walking Precautions:
- Walk at a comfortable, moderate pace that does not cause breathlessness.
- Wear proper warm, layered clothing, paying special attention to covering the chest, head, and feet.
- Perform a brief indoor warm-up before heading outside to prepare the body.
- Patients with heart conditions must continue their prescribed medications and monitor blood pressure regularly.
- Immediately avoid walking if experiencing chest pain, dizziness, unusual fatigue, or breathlessness.
As Hubballi residents navigate this cold spell, the collective message from doctors is clear: prioritize safety by choosing the right time for exercise and taking necessary precautions to protect heart health.
