A serious incident involving a junior resident doctor at Lucknow's prestigious King George's Medical University (KGMU) has sparked concern and led to an official complaint. Five days after the woman attempted to take her own life, her father approached the state's highest authority seeking justice.
Father Files Grievance on CM Portal
The distressed father filed a detailed complaint on the Chief Minister's public grievance portal. In his submission, he made a grave allegation. He stated that his daughter, a junior resident doctor undergoing treatment at KGMU, was driven to attempt suicide because of pressure from a male colleague to convert her religion.
The woman resident is currently receiving medical care at KGMU itself, and hospital authorities report her condition as stable. She was initially admitted to the KGMU Trauma Centre in a critical state following the suicide attempt. Her health continues to be monitored closely by medical professionals.
Allegations of Coercion and Mental Distress
According to the family's version of events detailed in the complaint, the woman was residing in a KGMU hostel. In July 2025, she became acquainted with a male resident doctor from the same institution. The family alleges that a relationship developed between the two doctors.
The situation took a troubling turn when discussions about marriage began. The family claims the male resident doctor insisted that the woman change her religion as a precondition for marriage. Upon her refusal to convert, the relationship reportedly ended. This sequence of events, the family asserts, caused the woman severe mental anguish and distress, which ultimately led to her attempting suicide.
University and Commission Respond
Beyond the CM portal, the family has also sought intervention from the State Women's Commission, urging them to look into the matter. When contacted, KGMU spokesperson Professor KK Singh provided the university's official stance.
Professor Singh clarified that KGMU has not yet received any formal written complaint directly from the family. However, as a precautionary measure, all relevant departments within the university have been alerted about the allegations. The university's proctorial cell has been specifically instructed to promptly examine any complaint that is formally lodged and to take necessary action in accordance with the rules.
"This includes informing the police if the situation warrants it," Singh added. He also assured that the university would extend full cooperation to any inquiry initiated by statutory bodies like the Women's Commission.
The case highlights serious concerns about mental health and alleged coercion within professional academic environments. As the woman continues her recovery, the focus now shifts to the investigations that may follow from the grievances filed.
