Kolkata Youth's Remarkable Journey from Dialysis to Stage After Kidney Transplant
In a heartwarming tale of medical triumph and personal resilience, 20-year-old Kolkata resident Md Tarvez has transformed from a dialysis-dependent teenager into a vibrant aspiring singer and future law student. His life took a dramatic turn five years ago when he received a life-saving kidney transplant at Charnock Hospital.
A New Lease on Life Through Organ Donation
The transplant, performed in 2021, utilized a cadaver kidney from a 38-year-old brain-dead woman who had been admitted to Ruby General Hospital following a road accident. This generous donation has enabled Tarvez to pursue dreams that once seemed impossible due to his chronic kidney condition.
"I have grown up mostly confined to bed and watched from a distance as my friends played and ran around," Tarvez recalled. "Due to regular dialysis, I had to stay indoors, ensure that I was not out in the sun or got drenched in rain. Everything changed when my father got a call from Charnock Hospital informing him that a cadaver kidney was available for transplant."
Overcoming Childhood Challenges
Tarvez's medical journey began when he was just one month old, diagnosed with kidney failure that would shape his entire childhood. He struggled with regular school attendance, missed out on playtime with peers, and underwent his first dialysis while in fifth grade.
"It was difficult for my parents since I was diagnosed with kidney failure when I was a month old," he shared. "I struggled to study, often missed school and could hardly ever play. I had my first dialysis when I was in class 5 and ever since, I had it regularly till the transplant. I wanted to play with my friends but felt weak."
The Transplant Procedure and Recovery
The critical moment arrived on July 9, 2021, when the Charnock Nephrology Team received notification about the available organ at midnight. Tarvez's family was immediately contacted and asked to bring him to the hospital that same night.
According to a Charnock Hospital spokesperson, "We knew Tarvez had been on haemodialysis for the past few years and his family was informed and asked to get him admitted that very night, and the necessary procedures were initiated."
The surgical team, led by consultant urologist and renal transplant expert Mohan Chand Seal and Ranjan Dey, performed the two-and-a-half-hour procedure with assistance from nephrologists Jayanta Dutta and Piyali Sarkar. The donated kidney was transported through a specially created 'green corridor' from Ruby Hospital to Charnock Hospital.
"We took him to the hospital and were directed to the OT, where consultant urologist and renal transplant expert Mohan Chand Seal and Ranjan Dey conducted the transplant," said Tarvez's father, Md Parvez.
Embracing New Opportunities
Following a month-long hospital recovery, Tarvez has steadily regained his health and vitality. Now at age 20, he's making up for lost time by pursuing multiple passions simultaneously.
"But my life has taken a new turn over the last five years," Tarvez explained. "Singing has been my passion and it kept me going. I have performed on stage occasionally and would like to pursue it now. But my dream is to become a lawyer."
His recent accomplishments include:
- Performing at several stage shows over the last few months
- Sitting for his higher secondary examinations this year
- Resuming regular studies after years of interruption
- Preparing for potential admission to law college
Tarvez's story serves as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of organ donation and modern medical care. From being an almost crippled teen to becoming a sprightly young man with multiple career aspirations, his journey offers hope to others facing similar health challenges while highlighting the life-changing potential of cadaver organ transplants.
