A 36-year-old man from China's Henan province has died just days after undergoing gastric bypass surgery that he hoped would help him make a positive impression on his girlfriend's parents. The case has ignited intense discussion on Chinese social media about the potential dangers associated with weight-loss procedures.
The Patient's Story and Motivation
The man, identified by the pseudonym Li Jiang from Xinxiang in Henan province, weighed over 134kg before the procedure. According to his elder brother, Li had recently entered a serious relationship and wanted to improve his appearance before the couple formally introduced their families to each other.
"He wanted to slim down before meeting the parents... He was preparing for marriage," his brother explained to local media outlets, revealing the personal motivation behind the surgical decision.
Medical Timeline and Complications
Li was admitted to the Ninth People's Hospital in Zhengzhou on 30 September. The gastric bypass surgery was performed on 2 October, after which medical staff transferred him to the ICU for close monitoring. He was later moved to a general ward as his condition appeared stable.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn on 4 October. Around 6:40 am, medical staff found Li unresponsive and immediately rushed him back to the intensive care unit. Despite emergency interventions, the 36-year-old died the following day from respiratory failure.
Underlying Health Conditions and Family Concerns
Medical records revealed that Li had been gaining weight rapidly over the past year and suffered from multiple obesity-related conditions including sleep-related breathing issues, hypertension, fatty liver, and metabolic syndrome.
The grieving family has raised serious questions about whether the hospital conducted a proper evaluation of Li's health before approving the surgery and whether the medical team responded quickly enough when complications emerged.
The hospital, speaking to Jimu News, defended its procedures, stating that Li met the clinical criteria for gastric bypass surgery and that their medical team acted immediately when his condition deteriorated.
