Medical emergencies never follow a schedule. For more than thirty years, one Mangaluru physician has built his entire life around this fundamental reality. Dr Satish Kallimar never viewed medicine as a typical nine-to-five job. Instead, he embraced it as a permanent promise to help patients whenever they need assistance.
A Clinic That Never Closes Its Doors
Dr Kallimar operates as a general physician with a bustling clinic in Bondel on Airport Road. He also maintains a fully equipped medical facility attached directly to his home. Many people advised him against this setup when he first considered it. Some recommended placing the clinic a short distance from his residence. Others even proposed converting part of the parking area into a consulting room.
Dr Kallimar trusted his own judgment. He explains his reasoning clearly. "I have a complete emergency setup right at home," he states. "I strongly believe a special connection forms with every patient I treat. Making them feel comfortable and sending them away with a smile matters deeply to me."
Extraordinary Daily Routines and Pandemic Service
The doctor's clinic officially runs from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, then reopens from 5 PM until nearly 10 PM. Yet his work often extends far beyond these hours. There are frequent nights when, just as he prepares to sleep, he finds patients waiting outside his door. On average, Dr Kallimar treats between 120 and 150 patients every single day.
His commitment became even more critical during the Covid-19 pandemic. While numerous clinics shut down completely, Dr Kallimar kept his doors open. His patient load surged dramatically during this period, with him seeing approximately 350 people on average each day.
Humble Beginnings and Community Support
An alumnus of KMC Mangalore, Dr Kallimar started his medical practice charging only two rupees per consultation. His fees increased gradually over the years as his reputation grew. He continues to treat impoverished patients completely free of charge. The doctor also provides consistent support to local government schools and anganwadi centers in his community.
Beyond regular medical care, Dr Kallimar performs death declarations. This emotionally challenging duty is something he always provides without any fee. As a member of the Family Doctors Association, he follows one guiding principle throughout his career. "I always believed in never saying no to anyone in need," he affirms.
Family Support and Personal Inspiration
Dr Kallimar's family stands firmly behind his demanding vocation. His son Dhiraj Kallimar also practices medicine, running his own clinic in Bajpe. Another son, Deepak Kallimar, works as an IT engineer.
The doctor credits his wife, Pramitha P Rao, as his constant source of strength. A mathematician and former lecturer, she has never complained about patients arriving at their home at all hours, even during the peak of the pandemic. "She is my true inspiration," Dr Kallimar says with appreciation.
