Family's Compassionate Organ Donation at SGPGIMS Saves Two Lives
In a profoundly moving display of humanity, the family of Rani Devi from Madhya Pradesh made the courageous decision to donate her organs after she was declared brain dead at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow. This selfless act has granted a new lease of life to two patients who were battling end-stage organ failure, transforming personal tragedy into a beacon of hope for others.
Medical Journey and Tragic Outcome
According to an official spokesperson, Rani Devi was admitted to SGPGIMS on March 20, suffering from a severe intracranial haemorrhage. She underwent a complex neurosurgical procedure on March 23 in an effort to save her life. Despite the sustained and dedicated efforts of the medical team, her condition showed no signs of improvement. Following a comprehensive evaluation, a panel of four senior consultants declared her brain dead on March 27, marking a devastating turn for her family.
The Decision to Donate Organs
In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, transplant coordinators and officials from the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation Uttar Pradesh provided crucial counselling to the family. After careful consideration, the family agreed to proceed with organ donation, demonstrating immense strength and compassion. This decision not only honored Rani Devi's memory but also offered a lifeline to others in critical need.
Successful Transplants and Medical Excellence
Two patients were selected from the official waiting list and successfully underwent kidney transplants using the donated organs. Both kidneys were transported to the transplant operation theatre on March 28, where the surgeries were completed without complications. This procedure highlights the critical importance of organ donation in addressing the growing demand for transplants in India.
Director Prof RK Dhiman of SGPGIMS emphasized that this case represents the second cadaveric organ transplant undertaken by the institute this year.
