In a major push to revolutionise medical services in Uttar Pradesh, the governing body of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow has approved ambitious plans focusing on Artificial Intelligence and ultra-specialised care. The high-level meeting, held on Tuesday, set the roadmap for transforming the state's healthcare landscape.
Building India's First Comprehensive Specialised Healthcare Ecosystem
The meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary and Institute President SP Goyal, gave the green light to establish a pioneering specialised healthcare Centre. This centre is envisioned as the cornerstone of India's first comprehensive specialised healthcare ecosystem. It aims to deliver cutting-edge treatment for complex and life-threatening conditions by integrating three core pillars: translational research, digital innovation, and patient-centric care.
Alongside this, the governing body approved the minutes of previous Academic Board meetings and cleared other major developmental projects for the institute.
AI Integration and Statewide Telemedicine Network
A significant part of the discussion revolved around leveraging technology. Registrar Col Varun Bajpai informed members that the state government has approved SGPGIMS-led initiatives in Artificial Intelligence and healthcare under the National AI Mission. These projects dovetail with Uttar Pradesh's broader vision to establish Lucknow as India's premier "AI City," thereby accelerating AI-assisted healthcare reforms.
To directly address the critical shortage of medical specialists in the state—currently standing at less than 0.3 specialists per 1,000 people—SGPGIMS will spearhead a transformative initiative. The institute will lead a statewide medical college network that will offer:
- 24x7 tele-healthcare services.
- Multi-speciality digital consultations.
- Rapid emergency response via a state-of-the-art digital health platform.
Strengthening Infrastructure and Supporting Staff
In other important decisions, the governing body took steps to bolster institutional safety and support research. It granted in-principle approval for creating a dedicated Fire Safety Cadre to enhance emergency preparedness within the SGPGIMS campus.
Recognising the contribution of nursing staff to clinical research, the body also sanctioned a clinical research allowance for the nursing faculty. The meeting was attended by key officials including Amit Kumar Ghosh, Additional Chief Secretary (Medical Education), and representatives from the finance department.
These collective decisions mark a strategic leap for SGPGIMS, positioning it at the forefront of medical innovation and expanded access to quality healthcare in Uttar Pradesh.
