In a groundbreaking development for India's public healthcare system, doctors at Kolkata's Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER) & SSKM Hospital have successfully performed the nation's first government hospital implantation of a leadless dual-chamber pacemaker. The historic procedure was conducted on Tuesday at Ananya, the hospital's dedicated facility for private patients, marking a significant advancement in accessible cardiac care.

The recipient, 66-year-old Asim Singha Chowdhury from Durgapur, had been suffering from tachybrady syndrome, a serious heart rhythm disorder that frequently caused him to lose consciousness. Following the successful implantation, Chowdhury is reportedly recovering well and will be discharged shortly. "I read about Ananya in newspapers and about cardiologist Saroj Mondal, who received the Padmashree award. I came to SSKM specifically to consult with the doctor," Chowdhury explained regarding his decision to seek treatment at the government facility.
Revolutionary Medical Technology
The Aveir DR device implanted represents the world's first leadless dual-chamber pacemaker, offering substantial advantages over traditional pacemakers. Dr. Saroj Mondal, an associate professor of cardiology at the hospital, highlighted the device's benefits: "The advantages include virtually no chance of infection, no visible surgical scar, and an extended shelf life compared to conventional pacemakers." While private hospitals across India began utilizing this technology following its national launch in October last year, this procedure establishes SSKM Hospital as the pioneering government institution to adopt this advanced cardiac solution.

The financial aspect of this medical breakthrough is particularly noteworthy. While the total cost for this procedure at private facilities can reach up to Rs 25 lakh, the treatment at Ananya was completed for approximately Rs 17 lakh, representing significant savings for patients. Chowdhury expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am thankful to the government for establishing such a facility within a government hospital. Beyond the lower cost, the service and care I received were truly excellent."
