West Bengal Medical Council Holds Surgeon Prima Facie Guilty in Fatal Negligence Case
The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has determined that a surgeon is prima facie guilty of medical negligence resulting in the tragic death of a 42-year-old man. The council has formally directed surgeon Sarfaraz Jajil Baig to submit a detailed reply to the charges against him within three weeks of receiving the official copy of the order.
Timeline of the Tragic Medical Incident
The case originated on February 2, 2024, when Aman Chopra, a resident of Camac Street in Kolkata, was admitted to Belle Vue Clinic suffering from severe acute abdominal pain. Medical tests conducted at the clinic confirmed a diagnosis of appendicitis. However, the patient's family has alleged that there was an unnecessary delay of two full days before the required surgical procedure was performed.
"Baig assured me that the surgery was minor, but it ultimately took two and a half hours to complete," stated Simran, the wife of the deceased Aman Chopra, recounting the distressing events.
Rapid Deterioration and Subsequent Surgeries
Following the initial surgery, Aman Chopra's health condition began to deteriorate alarmingly. He was urgently transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) during the night. Medical staff placed him on a ventilator and informed his wife Simran that he had lost approximately two litres of blood, instructing her to return to the hospital immediately.
The patient underwent a second emergency surgery in an attempt to stabilize his condition. "With no visible signs of improvement, I made the decision to fly him to a specialized hospital in Hyderabad," Simran explained. "Doctors in Hyderabad conducted examinations and revealed that one of his intestines had been punctured during the surgical procedure performed in Kolkata." Tragically, Aman Chopra succumbed to his injuries and passed away while receiving treatment in Hyderabad.
Official Council Communication and Surgeon's Response
The West Bengal Medical Council issued a formal letter to surgeon Sarfaraz Jajil Baig, which explicitly stated, "You have been found prima facie guilty of infamous conduct in a professional capacity." This strong wording underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the council's preliminary findings.
In response to the allegations and the council's directive, Sarfaraz Jajil Baig commented, "I have not yet received a copy of this official order." He is now required to prepare and submit a comprehensive response addressing the charges of medical negligence as outlined by the regulatory body.
