Varanasi Cancer Center Experiences Exponential Growth in Patient Care
The Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC) and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (HBCH) in Varanasi have witnessed a remarkable transformation in their healthcare delivery capacity. Annual patient registrations have surged dramatically from 6,307 in 2018 to an impressive 27,731 in 2025, representing an extraordinary increase of approximately 340% over this seven-year period.
Comprehensive Cancer Care Statistics Reveal Scale of Operations
According to institutional records, the total cumulative patient registrations since the center's inception have now reached 1,54,836 individuals seeking oncology services. This substantial patient volume has been matched by extensive medical interventions, with the institute performing 83,372 surgical procedures, providing radiotherapy to 19,706 patients, and administering 5,53,377 cycles of chemotherapy. These numbers underscore the comprehensive nature of cancer care being delivered at this premier medical facility.
Preventive Oncology and Community Outreach Initiatives
Professor Satyajit Pradhan, Director of MPMMCC and HBCH, emphasized the institute's strengthened focus on preventive oncology through both community-based and hospital-based screening programs. These initiatives specifically target oral, breast, and cervical cancers, with more than 5,000 individuals screened in 2025 alone through outreach camps and routine clinical services.
The institute is implementing a comprehensive Oral Cancer Elimination Demonstration Programme in collaboration with Varanasi district administration. Additionally, structured school education programs in both government and private schools are being utilized to raise cancer awareness among younger populations.
Technological Advancements and Surgical Innovations
In a significant milestone for cancer treatment in eastern Uttar Pradesh, MPMMCC became the first hospital in the region to introduce robotic surgery for oncology patients. The year 2025 saw substantial technological enhancements with the addition of two linear accelerators, one robotic surgery unit, and a CT scan machine through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support.
These advanced technologies have substantially improved diagnostic capabilities while reducing patient waiting times for critical procedures.
Academic Expansion and Specialized Training Programs
Strengthening its academic portfolio, the institute received approval from the National Medical Commission to initiate an MD program in Radiodiagnosis last year. Furthermore, permission was secured from the National Board of Examinations to launch a Diplomate of National Board (DNB) course in Palliative Medicine, reinforcing the center's commitment to specialized oncology education and comprehensive training for medical professionals.
Foundation Day Celebrations and Continuing Education
Marking its seventh Foundation Day, the institute organized a two-day event beginning with a Continuing Medical Education (CME) conference, followed by cultural performances. This celebration highlighted both the medical achievements and community engagement that have characterized the center's growth trajectory since its establishment.
The remarkable expansion of MPMMCC and HBCH reflects a broader trend of improved cancer care accessibility in Uttar Pradesh, with technological innovation, preventive screening, and specialized medical education converging to create a more robust oncology ecosystem in the region.
