In an extraordinary display of human resilience, a 25-year-old woman delivered a healthy baby girl inside a moving taxi that was caught in a severe, hour-long traffic jam on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred on the busy Ghaggar Bridge along the Ambala-Chandigarh highway, turning an ordinary commute into a dramatic and heartwarming scene.
A Race Against Time Turns into a Roadside Delivery
The woman, identified as Manisha, wife of Vinod Ravidas from Bihar's Katihar district, was living in a temporary shelter near Ramgarh Bhudda. Despite her due date being two weeks away on December 14, she experienced sudden labour pains, prompting her family to act quickly. Instead of waiting for an ambulance, they booked an Uber taxi to rush her to the hospital.
Fate, however, had other plans. As the taxi, driven by Rajesh, inched forward in the massive gridlock over the Ghaggar Bridge, Manisha's labour intensified rapidly. With no medical professionals in sight and the vehicle unable to move forward or backward, a female relative accompanying her stepped up to become an impromptu midwife.
For about 15 minutes, amidst the honking of frustrated commuters, the relative assisted Manisha inside the backseat of the cab. The driver and the husband, Vinod, stepped out to give them space and privacy. Against all odds, a baby girl was safely delivered right there in the taxi.
Swift Action Ensures Mother and Child's Safety
Once the newborn arrived, a quick plan was formulated to get medical attention. The male family members were shifted to a nearby auto-rickshaw, while the taxi, now carrying the new mother and her infant daughter, proceeded directly to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital.
The medical team at the hospital immediately took charge. They confirmed that both mother and child were in stable condition. As a precaution, the newborn was kept under observation in an incubator before being handed back to the relieved family. A senior doctor at the hospital shared the good news, stating, "The girl is healthy. Her cry was strong. The mother is stable too."
A Story of Empathy That Inspired a Locality
The incident highlighted remarkable compassion, especially from the taxi driver, Rajesh. Fully aware that his vehicle would be soiled, he did not refuse the ride or cancel the booking. His primary concern was the safety of his passengers. "Both mother and daughter are safe—that is more important than anything. I am just happy I could help," Rajesh said, his voice reflecting profound relief.
This rare and unexpected roadside delivery has since become the talk of the town in Mohali and surrounding areas. What could have easily turned into a tragedy instead became a powerful testament to human courage, quick thinking, and the innate kindness of strangers. The story of a baby born in the midst of a chaotic traffic jam on the Ghaggar Bridge serves as a miraculous reminder of life's unpredictability and the extraordinary power of ordinary people.
