Parvathy Thiruvothu's Candid Mental Health Revelation
Malayalam actress Parvathy Thiruvothu has shared deeply personal details about her mental health journey. She revealed experiencing a profoundly difficult period filled with loneliness, trauma and suicidal thoughts before therapy finally started helping her.
The Struggle to Find the Right Therapist
In a recent interview, Parvathy discussed the challenging process of finding proper mental health support. She admitted that while therapy became one of the best decisions of her life, choosing the wrong professional can actually make things worse.
"I had many bad experiences," Parvathy revealed about her initial attempts at therapy. "Till I found my current therapist, I had to endure many bad experiences."
The actress explained how difficult it was to find someone who treated her as a person rather than a public figure. Her first therapist was based in the United States, requiring sessions at 1-2 am Indian time. With Indian therapists, she encountered cultural misunderstandings that proved painful.
"Therapy was the best decision of my life, but a wrong therapist may worsen the situation," she emphasized, highlighting the importance of finding the right professional.
Darkest Moments and Suicidal Thoughts
Parvathy opened up about one of the most difficult phases of her life when loneliness overwhelmed her. "There was a time when I felt very lonely," she recalled. "I kept telling my friends that I'm trying new therapists but nothing seems to be working out."
The actress made an even more personal revelation about her mental state during that period. "I used to think that my situation was beyond anyone's help," she shared. "Circumstances were distressing during those times. At times, I also experienced suicidal thoughts."
Reflecting on early 2021, Parvathy said she has vague memories of that period. "During January-February 2021, I can't clearly recall. When I look at my phone's gallery, I can remember what exactly happened. After that, therapy started working out for me."
Finding Healing Through EMDR Therapy
Parvathy's healing journey took a positive turn when she discovered the right therapeutic approach. She currently undergoes two types of therapy that have transformed her life.
"Now I am taking two kinds of therapies," she explained. "The first one is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which changed my life, and now I have a trauma-informed therapist."
The actress described how EMDR therapy specifically helped her. "EMDR is helping me with mental strength and the feeling of shame within my body. I also have a sex therapist. So now my plate is full—work, friends, family and efforts to rediscover myself through this process."
Reflecting on her personal growth, Parvathy noted that people often find themselves more after turning thirty. She observed how perspectives on relationships change and life begins to feel more fulfilling and balanced.
Professional Life Continues
While focusing on her mental health journey, Parvathy continues her acting career. She previously appeared alongside the late Irrfan Khan in Qarib Qarib Singlle (2017). Recently, she completed shooting for the Malayalam film I, Nobody, co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran.
Parvathy's candid conversation about mental health adds to the growing dialogue around psychological well-being in India. Her experience highlights both the challenges of finding appropriate mental health care and the transformative power of proper treatment.
