Mysuru District Achieves Major Milestone in Tuberculosis Elimination
The Department of Health and Family Welfare in Mysuru district has achieved a significant public health milestone by officially declaring 147 gram panchayats as tuberculosis-free zones. This declaration represents a major step forward in empowering local governance to take ownership of disease elimination efforts while simultaneously working to reduce social stigma, enhance diagnostic capabilities, and provide comprehensive support to TB patients throughout their treatment journey.
Comprehensive Awareness Campaigns Yield Results
Out of the 256 gram panchayats within Mysuru district, nearly 60% have now been certified as tuberculosis-free. This remarkable achievement stems from continuous awareness programs implemented by district authorities specifically designed to eradicate tuberculosis from local communities. The success has been driven by extensive door-to-door awareness campaigns conducted by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), who have worked in close collaboration with local health assistants from all primary healthcare facilities across the district.
District health authorities have implemented systematic identification and screening protocols for symptomatic cases across all state-run hospitals, which has contributed significantly to the declining TB case numbers. The proactive approach to early detection and intervention has proven instrumental in controlling the spread of this infectious respiratory disease.
Government Schemes and Nutritional Support
The successful implementation of government initiatives has played a crucial role in this public health victory. The Nikshay Poshan Yojana (NPY), operating under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme, has provided registered TB patients with monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000 along with essential nutritional support during their treatment period. This comprehensive support system has not only improved treatment adherence but has also addressed the socioeconomic factors that often complicate tuberculosis management.
District tuberculosis control officer Dr. Mohammed Siraj confirmed the achievement, stating that 147 gram panchayats among the district's 256 have now been officially declared tuberculosis-free. He emphasized that an action plan has been meticulously prepared by district health authorities to extend this success to the remaining gram panchayats and urban areas within Mysuru district.
Data-Driven Progress and Future Planning
The district has documented a steady decline in tuberculosis cases over recent years, with health authorities identifying 3,597 cases in 2021, 4,008 in 2022, 3,713 in 2023, 3,500 in 2024, and 3,386 cases in 2025. This downward trend reflects the effectiveness of early screening protocols and prompt treatment interventions that have become standard practice throughout the district's healthcare system.
Dr. Siraj further explained that taluk-level committees have been established specifically to control the spread of tuberculosis, implementing infection control measures and community education initiatives. These efforts include sensitizing residents about maintaining proper ventilation to disperse bacteria and promoting hygienic practices such as covering mouths when coughing.
Recognizing Tuberculosis Symptoms
Health authorities continue to emphasize the importance of recognizing early tuberculosis symptoms, which include:
- Persistent cough lasting three weeks or longer
- Chest pain and discomfort
- Coughing up blood or phlegm
- Fever and night sweats
- Fatigue and unexplained weight loss
The district's multifaceted approach combining financial support, nutritional assistance, community engagement, and systematic screening has created a model for tuberculosis elimination that other regions might emulate. As Mysuru district continues its efforts to declare all remaining areas tuberculosis-free, this achievement stands as a testament to what coordinated public health initiatives can accomplish when implemented with determination and community participation.
