Ahmedabad Civic Hospital Performs Free Hernia Surgery on 21-Year-Old
Ahmedabad Civic Hospital Performs Free Hernia Surgery

In a significant step towards strengthening surgical services at civic health facilities, doctors at the Thaltej Community Health Center (CHC), managed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), successfully performed a hernioplasty surgery on a 21-year-old patient.

The surgery was performed on May 27 by Dr. Hitesh Patel and his medical team on Krish A Pal, who was diagnosed with a right indirect inguinal hernia. The procedure, conducted under general anaesthesia, lasted from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

According to doctors, the patient, the son of a rickshaw driver, had swelling in the groin area along with a large muscle lump in the inner wall, requiring surgical intervention. The operation was performed free of cost using the patient's PMJAY card.

Dr. Chetan Choudhary of Thaltej CHC said the case came to the attention of doctors during an HPV vaccination drive held earlier. "A rickshaw driver had approached us seeking treatment for his son's hernia. After evaluation, we planned the surgery at the Thaltej CHC. Despite the challenges of conducting such surgeries at a community health centre, the medical team successfully completed the operation," he said.

He added that the successful procedure has increased public confidence in civic-run health centres. "Following this success, we have started receiving more enquiries for similar surgeries, which is a positive development," Dr. Choudhary said.

Details of the Surgery

The hernioplasty was a critical procedure to repair the inguinal hernia, a condition where tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. The surgery involved reinforcing the weakened area with a mesh to prevent recurrence.

Patient Background

Krish A Pal, a 21-year-old resident of Ahmedabad, had been experiencing discomfort and swelling in his groin for several months. His father, a rickshaw driver, struggled to afford private healthcare, making the free surgery at the CHC a vital lifeline.

Impact on Community Health

The success of this surgery highlights the potential of community health centres to handle complex procedures, reducing the burden on larger hospitals. Dr. Choudhary emphasized that the CHC now plans to offer more surgical services, including hernia repairs and other general surgeries, to cater to the underserved population.

This development aligns with the AMC's goal of improving healthcare access for economically weaker sections, leveraging government schemes like PMJAY to provide cost-free treatment.
