Amritsar Health Department Intensifies Fight Against Tuberculosis with 100-Day Campaign
The Health Department in Amritsar has launched a robust 100-day campaign to combat tuberculosis, marking a significant escalation in efforts to eradicate the disease. This initiative, timed with World TB Day, involves comprehensive door-to-door screening to identify potential TB patients across the district.
Door-to-Door Screening for Early Detection
Civil surgeon Dr. Satinder Singh Bajwa emphasized that the primary goal of the 100 Days TB Free India Campaign is to ensure timely identification and treatment of TB cases. Health Department teams will conduct extensive door-to-door visits to screen individuals, ensuring no one is left without access to necessary medical care.
Dr. Bajwa added that special attention will be given to locating patients who have not sought hospital treatment. These individuals will be provided with free treatment at government hospitals, with Community Health Officers (CHOs) playing a crucial role in facilitating this outreach.
Comprehensive Treatment and Monitoring
District TB officer Dr. Vinay Tandon highlighted the importance of completing the full treatment course. He stated that if a patient adheres to the entire 194-day medication regimen, tuberculosis can be completely cured. To support this, the Health Department offers TB medicines free of cost to all patients and implements continuous monitoring to prevent disease spread.
As part of the campaign, screening will target approximately 30% of the total population in rural villages, focusing on high-risk areas to maximize impact. This proactive approach aims to reduce TB incidence through early intervention and sustained healthcare support.
Public Awareness and Symptom Reporting
The Health Department has issued a public appeal urging anyone experiencing symptoms such as persistent cough, fever, or unexplained weight loss to immediately contact the nearest government health centre. Early reporting is critical for effective treatment and containment of the disease.
This 100-day campaign represents a concerted effort by Amritsar's health authorities to align with national goals for a TB-free India, leveraging community engagement and systematic healthcare strategies to combat this public health challenge.
