ASR District Authorities Launch Emergency Safety Drive After Multiple Drowning Deaths
Visakhapatnam: A disturbing surge in drowning fatalities across Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district has triggered urgent action from local authorities, highlighting the severe risks associated with natural water bodies during the intense summer season. The majority of victims have been identified as young individuals with little to no swimming proficiency, amplifying concerns about public safety.
Recent Tragedies Prompt Immediate Response
The district administration has issued comprehensive directives to all relevant departments, mandating an escalation of preventive strategies. This decisive move follows two separate, heartbreaking incidents that occurred within days of each other.
On April 9, three young girls tragically drowned at a waterfall located in the Hukumpeta mandal. Shortly after, in a separate incident in the Pedabayalu mandal, three boys, all under the age of 12, lost their lives while playing in the Matysagedda River.
Proactive Measures to Combat Rising Threats
With temperatures climbing and the summer vacation period approaching, officials anticipate a significant influx of visitors, particularly children and teenagers, to popular spots like waterfalls, rivers, and streams. In response, District Collector T. Nishanthi has mobilized a multi-pronged safety initiative.
Key directives include:
- Immediate identification and mapping of all high-risk water bodies by revenue and police departments.
- Mandatory installation of clear warning signboards and pictorial caution displays at dangerous locations.
- Enhanced police patrols at identified high-risk sites, with increased focus on weekends and public holidays.
- Exploration of technological interventions, such as the potential introduction of breathalyzer tests at popular waterfalls to prevent intoxicated individuals from entering the water.
Sariya Waterfalls Identified as Critical Hazard Zone
Authorities have pinpointed Sariya Waterfalls, situated approximately 70 kilometers from Visakhapatnam, as the most perilous location in the district. This site alone has been responsible for over 40 drowning deaths in the last ten years, underscoring the critical need for intervention.
Community Awareness and Educational Outreach
Beyond physical safeguards, a major component of the strategy involves extensive public education. Schools across ASR district have been instructed to conduct special sessions on water safety, sensitizing students to the inherent dangers. Furthermore, parent-teacher meetings will be utilized to emphasize these risks ahead of the vacation break, ensuring guardians are fully informed.
Officials express confidence that this combined approach—integrating visible signage, community awareness campaigns, regular patrols, and potential technological aids—will effectively reduce the incidence of drowning fatalities. The overarching goal is to transform ASR district's natural attractions into safer environments for all visitors, preventing further loss of life during the vulnerable summer months.
