Bengal Health Dept Terminates Doctor Over Threat Culture

The West Bengal health department has taken disciplinary action against Dr. Birupaksha Biswas by terminating his senior residency and barring him from state government employment. Biswas, who was in his first year of senior residency in pathology at Burdwan Medical College, has been ordered to deposit a fine of Rs 20 lakh for the remaining two years of his senior residency.

Action Follows Recent Departmental Proceedings

This action comes just a week after the health department initiated departmental proceedings against another junior doctor, Avik De. The names of both doctors surfaced multiple times during the RG Kar protests, with fellow junior doctors accusing them of being the masterminds behind the threat culture prevalent in medical college campuses.

Political Reaction

BJP MLA and oncologist Indranil Khan commented, “There is no more space for threat culture and syndicate Raj in Bengal.”

Background of the Case

Biswas had been kept under suspension pending a departmental enquiry during the RG Kar movement. Although the enquiry committee submitted its findings months ago, the disciplinary action was only taken on Friday.
