Bihar Government Activates High Alert for Impending Severe Heatwave Season

The Bihar state government has placed all departments on maximum alert status in anticipation of severe heatwave conditions forecasted to persist from mid-April through June. This proactive measure aims to implement comprehensive preventive strategies to safeguard public health and minimize safety risks during the extreme weather period.

High-Level Review Meeting Coordinates Multi-Departmental Response

During a critical review meeting convened on Monday, Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena meticulously assessed preparedness plans with senior officials representing ten key departments. These included Health, Public Health Engineering, Transport, Energy, Education, and Urban Development sectors. The chief secretary mandated strict adherence to the established Standard Operating Procedure for heat management across all governmental bodies.

Comprehensive Water and Health Infrastructure Preparations

Immediate directives require departments to establish drinking water kiosks at strategic public locations including bus stands, marketplaces, road intersections, and other high-traffic areas. Water tankers must be maintained in readiness for emergency supply deployment. Additionally, authorities have been ordered to complete repairs on damaged drinking water pipelines and conduct thorough cleaning and maintenance of all water tankers within a strict 10–15 day timeframe.

The Health Department received specific instructions to convene meetings with all civil surgeons and Primary Health Center in-charges before April commences. These meetings must ensure adequate stockpiles of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and guarantee strict compliance with established heatwave treatment protocols throughout medical facilities.

Special Focus on Vulnerable Populations and Infrastructure

Educational institutions have been directed to implement comprehensive heat protection education programs for children while maintaining sufficient ORS supplies on school premises. The chief secretary issued a stern warning that any negligence toward children's safety during the heatwave would face severe consequences.

Special protective arrangements have been mandated for laborers working during extreme temperatures. These include provisions for drinking water, shaded rest areas, ice packs, and first aid facilities at all worksites. Public transport services may face regulated operations between 11:00 AM and 3:30 PM during periods of extreme heat to protect commuters and workers.

The Energy Department has been tasked with ensuring uninterrupted power supply while implementing enhanced measures to prevent fire hazards that frequently accompany heatwave conditions. Disaster management officials have issued warnings that heatwave intensity is likely to escalate significantly in the coming months.

Enhanced Fire Safety Protocols During High-Risk Period

Simultaneously, District Magistrate Thiyagarajan S M has appealed to all residents to rigorously follow fire safety standards established by the Disaster Management Department and Bihar Fire Services. This precautionary measure addresses the heightened fire risk period spanning from March 15 to June 15.

The district magistrate emphasized that strong westerly winds prevalent during this season substantially increase fire hazards, particularly in rural regions where crop fields, granaries, and standing crops face severe damage potential. The coordinated government response aims to create a multi-layered protective framework addressing both heat-related health emergencies and secondary fire risks during the challenging summer months.
