In a heartwarming act of generosity, the family of a 25-year-old youth, who was declared brain dead following a severe road accident, donated his organs on Wednesday, providing a new lease of life to five individuals.

The Incident

Devanathan, a resident of Madurai, met with a severe road accident on May 11. He was immediately admitted to Meenakshi Super Speciality Hospital, where he failed to regain consciousness and was subsequently declared brain dead.

Family's Decision

After counseling by the transplant team, his family consented to the organ donation. In the early hours of Wednesday, a successful retrieval procedure was conducted.

Organ Allocation

  • One kidney and the liver were transplanted at Meenakshi hospital.
  • The second kidney was sent to Kauvery Medical Centre in Thennur.
  • His corneas were donated to Aravind Eye Hospital.

Although heart and lung donation was approved, no compatible recipients were available at the time.

Tribute and Honors

District collector K J Praveen Kumar paid tribute to the donor, and the state government honored the family with an official salute under the organ donor protocol.
