Heatwave Emergency in Buxar: Multiple Students Collapse at School
A severe heatwave has triggered a health crisis at Kanehari High School in the Rajpur block of Buxar district, where at least 10 students fainted on Monday morning. This alarming incident occurred shortly after the morning assembly as classes commenced, marking the second such episode at the institution within just three days.
Immediate Response and Medical Treatment
According to school headmaster Arvind Kumar Singh, several students began complaining of dizziness and weakness before collapsing in classrooms and corridors. Teachers and staff swiftly provided first aid, moving affected students to shaded areas with fans. Parents were immediately alerted, and a medical team was dispatched to the school without delay.
Students with more serious conditions were transported by ambulance to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Rajpur. Dr. Sujit Kumar, the CHC medical officer, confirmed that the children received treatment with IV fluids and refreshments. All students were treated and discharged by the afternoon, with their condition now reported as stable.
Recurring Incidents and Administrative Failures
This was the second heat-related incident at Kanehari High School in three days, following a similar episode on Saturday. Headmaster Singh attributed both events to the extreme heat spell and revealed that the school had previously requested essential supplies like medicines and oral rehydration solution (ORS) from the health department. However, these supplies had not yet arrived, exacerbating the crisis.
In response to Monday's incident, authorities ordered the school to close early at 9 AM as a precautionary measure. Parents and local residents have urgently called on the administration to implement immediate protective measures for students during the ongoing heatwave.
Underlying Factors and Official Actions
Dr. Sujit Kumar noted that many students attend morning classes without proper meals, which, combined with soaring temperatures, likely aggravated their health conditions. Meanwhile, a district coordination committee and disaster management meeting was convened at the collectorate under District Magistrate Sahila.
Officials were directed to ensure the availability of ORS in all schools, prioritize repairs of defunct hand pumps, and submit photographic proof upon completion. These directives aim to address the prevailing heatwave conditions and prevent future emergencies.
Broader Implications and Community Concerns
The repeated incidents highlight critical gaps in school safety protocols during extreme weather events. The lack of timely medical supplies and inadequate preventive measures have raised serious concerns among parents and community members. As heatwave conditions persist, there is growing pressure on local authorities to enhance preparedness and protect vulnerable students from similar health risks.
