Sanitation workers have accused the Coimbatore corporation of failing to provide safety kits for those involved in drain cleaning. Workers affiliated with the Samuga Needhi Thuimai Paniyalargal Sangam submitted a petition to the corporation commissioner on Tuesday, urging immediate action to supply essential equipment such as quality gloves, shoes, and masks. They also called for the re-employment of corporation drivers who were terminated by contractors without prior notice.
Health Risks and Lack of Support
Prabakaran Kishan, a driver, highlighted that drains in many areas carry sewage, exposing workers to infections. "As a result, many workers involved in drain cleaning have developed various infections, including skin and respiratory issues," he stated. He alleged that even when workers fell ill, the contractor provided minimal medical support. Kishan recounted an incident where a postgraduate youth working as a contract worker in the East Zone died, and the case went unreported. "After prolonged exposure to drainage without protective equipment, his hands and legs became discoloured, indicating an infection. To date, neither the contractor nor the corporation has provided compensation to his family," he said.
Contractor Negligence and Public Generosity
Kishan urged the corporation to prevent such tragedies from recurring. He noted that some residents offer small amounts of money for tea or coffee out of genuine concern, but workers do not ask for anything from the public. However, when they request gloves and other safety equipment from the contractor, they are refused and advised to use the money offered by residents to purchase the equipment themselves. The workers demand accountability and immediate measures to ensure their safety and dignity.
