India on Thursday launched a sharp rebuttal against China and Pakistan at the United Nations, after the two countries made references to Jammu and Kashmir during a UN Security Council debate. India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti, categorically stated that no other country has the right to comment on India's internal affairs, including the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Strong Response to Unwarranted Remarks
During the UNSC open debate on 'Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter', China and Pakistan attempted to raise the issue of Jammu and Kashmir. In response, Ambassador Tirumurti exercised the right of reply and strongly condemned their statements.
He said, "We have heard references to the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Let me be clear: no other country has the right to comment on India's internal affairs. Jammu and Kashmir is, was, and will always be an integral part of India."
China's Stance Rebuffed
China's representative had earlier called for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, a reference to outdated resolutions that India has consistently rejected. Tirumurti reminded the Council that India's position on bilateral issues with Pakistan is clear: all outstanding matters should be resolved bilaterally, without third-party involvement.
He further stated that Pakistan's continued attempts to raise the issue at international forums are a clear violation of the Shimla Agreement and the Lahore Declaration, which mandate bilateral resolution of disputes.
Pakistan's Allegations Dismissed
Pakistan's representative had alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir and called for the revocation of Article 370, which was abrogated by India in August 2019. Tirumurti dismissed these allegations as baseless and reiterated that the abrogation of Article 370 was an internal decision of the Indian Parliament, taken to ensure the region's development and integration.
He added, "The so-called human rights violations are nothing but a propaganda tool used by Pakistan to divert attention from its own record of state-sponsored terrorism and human rights abuses."
India's Firm Stance on Sovereignty
India's strong response underscores its unwavering commitment to its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Indian delegation made it clear that any attempt to interfere in India's internal matters will be met with a firm and appropriate response. The UN Security Council debate was attended by representatives of all member states, and India's statement was met with support from several countries that recognize India's position.
India also highlighted the positive developments in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, including improved security, economic growth, and the holding of local elections. The region has witnessed a significant reduction in terrorism and an increase in investment and tourism.
Conclusion
India's diplomatic offensive at the UN sends a clear message to China and Pakistan that any attempt to undermine India's sovereignty will not be tolerated. The Indian government remains committed to the peaceful resolution of all disputes through bilateral dialogue, while firmly rejecting any external interference.
