Doctors Call Off Strike in Prayagraj After Colleague's Release
Doctors End Strike in Prayagraj After Colleague Freed

Patients across Prayagraj and neighbouring districts breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday as doctors unofficially called off their two-day-long strike and returned to clinical duties. The protest, which had disrupted medical services, was withdrawn after authorities confirmed the release of a detained colleague.

Background of the Strike

The resident doctors held their protest on the SRN Hospital campus on Tuesday and Wednesday after one of their colleagues, Dr Monish Ali, was allegedly detained by police in Rampur. Additionally, doctors associated with the Allahabad Medical Association had demanded his release, threatening to escalate the strike if their demand was not met. The strike had caused significant inconvenience to patients, many of whom had travelled from distant areas seeking medical care.

Resolution and Resumption of Duties

On Wednesday, the resident doctors were informed that Dr Monish had been released and had safely returned to his home in Rampur. Following this assurance, the resident doctors called off the protest and resumed their duties immediately. An office-bearer of the Resident Doctors’ Association stated, "Resident doctors have undoubtedly assessed the grim condition of patients wandering from one place to another in search of medical attention. Acknowledging all these factors, we did not hesitate to bring things back to normal."

Patient Reactions

Patients expressed relief at the resumption of services. Astha, a patient from Kaushambi who arrived at SRN Hospital for treatment, said, "I came along with my family for a doctor’s consultation in the OPD. The doctors patiently attended to me and prescribed treatment." Many others echoed similar sentiments, appreciating the doctors' decision to prioritize patient care.

Security Arrangements

Even though the protest was symbolic in nature, elaborate security arrangements were in place in and around the SRN Hospital campus on Wednesday. Police personnel were deployed to ensure law and order, though no untoward incidents were reported. The hospital administration also took steps to restore normalcy and address the backlog of patients.

The swift resolution of the strike has been attributed to effective communication between the doctors and authorities. The incident highlights the challenges faced by healthcare professionals and the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes without compromising patient welfare.
