Mangaluru: Uncertainty continues over the state government's promise to supply free notebooks along with textbooks to students in government and aided schools from the coming academic year, with no official clarity just weeks before schools reopen.
Government Announcement and Current Status
The state government had announced in September last year that students in 46,000 government schools and 7,000 aided schools would receive free notebooks along with textbooks from the 2026-27 academic year. However, as the new term approaches, parents, teachers, and education officials say there is still no confirmation on whether the scheme will be implemented on time.
Parent and Teacher Concerns
The lack of communication has left parents unsure whether to buy notebooks themselves. Typically, schools issue a list of required notebooks before the academic year begins, but many have not this time. According to a block education officer (BEO), the district has so far received only 30% of textbook supplies for the next academic year and has received no official communication regarding notebooks. The officer said teachers have repeatedly sought clarification, but district-level officials have not been able to provide any answers.
Logistical Challenges
Education officials pointed out that even if a formal order is issued now, time would be required for tendering, printing, and distribution, raising doubts over whether notebooks can reach schools before classes begin. They added that even if the scheme is implemented, supplies may arrive late. Meanwhile, textbook distribution is expected to proceed on schedule.
Official Response
When contacted, V Rashmi Mahesh, principal secretary to the government, department of school education and literacy, said the department was still awaiting complete clarity from school education and literacy minister Madhu Bangarappa and expected a clearer picture within a week.
