Goa Launches Intensive 100-Day Campaign to Combat Tuberculosis Using AI Technology
The central government has pinpointed 103 high-risk locations for tuberculosis (TB) across the state of Goa. These areas will be the primary focus of the directorate of health services (DHS) during the ongoing TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, a crucial 100-day eradication campaign.
AI-Powered Identification of Vulnerable Populations
State TB officer Dr. Manish Gaunekar revealed that the Union health ministry utilized an advanced artificial intelligence tool to identify these high-risk spots. The AI system analyzed 30 distinct parameters to determine areas with elevated TB transmission potential.
In addition to these specific locations, the DHS has compiled a comprehensive list of 240,000 vulnerable individuals across Goa. This population includes senior citizens, individuals with alcohol dependency, diabetics, and other at-risk groups. To date, health authorities have successfully screened 150,000 people from this vulnerable category.
Comprehensive Screening Strategy
The remaining 88,999 vulnerable individuals will undergo thorough medical examinations during the intensive campaign. "We will be screening everyone in the vulnerable population as well as the high-risk population with chest X-rays," Dr. Gaunekar explained. "In addition, we will also check their haemoglobin, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and body mass index."
The screening protocol includes important exceptions for efficiency. Asymptomatic vulnerable persons who have already undergone chest X-rays within the past year will not require repeat imaging during this campaign.
Targeting Congregate Settings and Population Concentrations
The eradication initiative will extend beyond individual screening to include congregate settings where population density increases transmission risk. Health teams will conduct examinations at:
- Construction sites
- Boarding schools and educational institutions
- Old age homes and senior care facilities
- Prisons and correctional centers
"Our TB incidence reduced by 48 percent from 2015 and our testing rate has also increased," Dr. Gaunekar noted. "Through the 100-day campaign, we want to identify those who have been missed and start them on treatment. We hope to achieve elimination at the earliest."
Persistent Challenges in TB Elimination
Despite progress, significant obstacles remain in Goa's fight against tuberculosis. Individuals with alcohol dependency and diabetes present particular challenges, as they often delay screening despite exhibiting symptoms and frequently present with advanced TB cases. Treatment adherence also proves problematic within these groups.
Diabetic patients who complete TB treatment sometimes neglect their diabetes medication, leading to TB recurrence. The floating population creates additional complications when individuals begin treatment in Goa but relocate before completion, making follow-up impossible.
Another concerning trend involves contacts of TB patients who demonstrate reluctance to begin preventive treatment or consistently take prescribed medications, potentially allowing the disease to spread within communities.
The TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan represents a coordinated effort to address these multifaceted challenges through targeted screening, comprehensive medical evaluation, and focused intervention strategies across Goa's most vulnerable populations and high-risk areas.
