Health Emergency in Muvattupuzha as Illegal Waste Dumping Pollutes Vital Waterway
The Mannankadavu Canal in ward 18 of Muvattupuzha municipality has become a focal point of a severe public health crisis due to rampant illegal waste dumping. Local councillors and the CPM Muvattupuzha area committee are demanding immediate government intervention to address the escalating situation, which threatens both community well-being and environmental integrity.
Foul Smell and Disease Risks Alarm Densely Populated Area
According to CPM area secretary Anish M Mathew, the canal, which flows through a densely populated residential zone, has transformed into a source of persistent foul odors and a potential breeding ground for infectious diseases. "The deteriorating conditions have made daily life unbearable for local residents, pedestrians, and especially vulnerable children attending a nearby anganwadi, who face heightened risks of contracting waterborne illnesses," Mathew emphasized. He detailed how the stagnant, polluted water poses a direct threat to public health, with contaminants likely spreading through air and contact.
Repeated Appeals Ignored by Successive Municipal Councils
Mathew alleged that this critical issue has been consistently raised before multiple municipal councils, including the current UDF-led administration, yet no substantive action has been implemented. A formal complaint was previously submitted to the district collector, advocating for comprehensive measures such as the establishment of a sewage treatment plant (STP) in the vicinity to manage waste effectively. The lack of progress highlights systemic failures in municipal governance and environmental oversight.
Pollution Threatens Muvattupuzha River and Drinking Water Sources
Opposition councillors within the municipality have voiced grave concerns that untreated waste from the canal ultimately discharges into the Muvattupuzha river, jeopardizing regional drinking water supplies. They assert that despite raising the matter in successive council meetings, authorities have neglected to implement a permanent solution. Former councillor of ward 18, Jaffer Sadhik M A, stated, "As the pollution intensifies, we are compelled to take direct action. We have urgently appealed to municipal leadership to initiate immediate cleaning operations, enforce strict anti-dumping regulations, and safeguard both the river and local drinking water sources from further contamination."
The situation underscores a pressing need for coordinated efforts between local government, environmental agencies, and community stakeholders to mitigate health risks and restore ecological balance in Muvattupuzha.
