Karnataka Faces Water Crisis, Rs 45 Crore Allocated

Bengaluru: Karnataka could face severe drinking water shortage over the next two months as heatwave conditions intensify, Rural Development Minister Priyank Kharge said while announcing an allocation of Rs 45 crore to manage the crisis in rural areas.

Heatwave Worsens Water Scarcity

“I am seeing such heatwave conditions in the state after many years. Water levels in borewells and reservoirs are falling, and there could be severe drinking water shortage,” Kharge said. The minister noted that the situation requires urgent attention to prevent distress among residents.

Emergency Measures Announced

The minister stated that funds have been released to districts for immediate measures, including tanker water supply and hiring private borewells in water-stressed regions. “Ensuring access to safe drinking water during summer is a top priority. This allocation is aimed at enabling swift, localised responses in water-scarce regions. District administrations must act promptly and responsibly to ensure no village faces distress due to lack of drinking water,” he added.

The allocation of Rs 45 crore is intended to support district administrations in implementing short-term solutions such as water tankers, repair of existing borewells, and deployment of additional water sources. The government is also monitoring the situation closely and may release additional funds if needed.

Residents in several parts of Karnataka have already started experiencing water shortages, with borewells drying up and reservoir levels dropping. The state government has urged people to use water judiciously and has initiated awareness campaigns on water conservation.

The heatwave conditions are expected to persist over the next two months, raising concerns about agricultural output and livestock as well. The government is coordinating with various departments to mitigate the impact of the crisis.
