Kolkata is likely to remain under the spell of heat and humidity for at least three to four days, as the Met office reports no significant rainfall in the immediate future. On Tuesday, the city experienced another harsh summer day with a maximum temperature of 36.2 degrees Celsius, which is only 2.4 notches above normal. However, high humidity levels have pushed up the discomfort index.
Forecast for North Bengal
The Met office has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in north Bengal over the next seven days, offering a contrast to the dry conditions in the southern part of the state.
No Immediate Relief for Kolkata
“We do not expect any significant rain in Kolkata in the next three to four days. Even if it rains, it is likely to be light and scattered, which can only provide brief relief. However, there is an increasing possibility of rain from Saturday onwards,” said meteorologist Sourish Bandyopadhyay of the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.
The southwest monsoon hit the city on Friday, but a sluggish monsoon flow has left Kolkata high and dry. The maximum temperature is expected to hover between 35 and 36 degrees Celsius for now. Some northwestern districts are receiving a few spells of rain.
Weak Monsoon Flow
“The monsoon flow is weak, and there is no significant system over south Bengal or the neighborhood that would trigger substantial rain at present,” added Bandyopadhyay.
