Madikeri Villagers Take a Stand Against Asphalt Plant

For many years, an asphalt and cement mixing plant operated in Echur Kunda village under Hathur gram panchayat in Ponnampet taluk. Now, the villagers have had enough. They complain that the plant has severely affected their health. The locals also allege it causes significant pollution.

Protest Erupts in Echur Kunda

On Monday, the villagers staged a protest. They were led by former Hathur gram panchayat president Gummattira Darshan Nanjappa and BJP district vice president Gummattira Kilan Ganapathy. The group held a dharna to voice their grievances.

The village panchayat had earlier decided not to renew the licences of these units. This decision came due to strong opposition from the villagers. Accordingly, the Hathur gram panchayat did not issue a No Objection Certificate to renew the licences.

Despite this, the villagers expressed deep dissatisfaction. They noted that the asphalt and cement mixing units were still being operated. This continued operation fueled their anger and led to the protest.

Warnings and Official Response

The protesters issued a clear warning. If the unit is not closed, they will file a complaint with the Gonikoppal and Virajpet tahsildars. They also warned of a larger protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office. This would happen if the taluk administration fails to take action to close the mixing unit.

Gonikoppal Sub-Inspector Pradeep arrived at the protest site. He requested the villagers to withdraw their protest. After the protest, the villagers met with AS Ponnanna, the MLA of the constituency, in Virajpet.

Following the villagers' demands, the Congress MLA visited the asphalt mixing plant. He discussed the matter with both the villagers and officials. Virajpet DSP and other officials were present during this discussion.

The villagers disclosed that decisions regarding this issue will be taken shortly. They remain hopeful for a resolution that addresses their health and environmental concerns.
