Residents of Thasildar Nagar in Madurai are grappling with a severe sanitation crisis as several homes remain unconnected to the underground drainage (UGD) system. Forced to rely on PVC pipes, they are directing sewage directly into the Vandiyur supply channel, transforming it into an open sewer.
Residents Express Frustration Over Delayed Connections
Indiradevi, a resident of Annai Abirami Street, voiced her frustration, stating that she paid for a new UGD pipeline connection over a month ago but has seen no action. "The pipe leading to the open sewer is the only way to get rid of the sewage for many people, but it poses serious health risks and is a breeding ground for mosquitoes," she said. She added that children cannot play outside due to the open sewer.
Another resident, Velmurugan, highlighted that numerous petitions have been submitted to the corporation requesting closure of the open sewer and new connections, but no permanent solution has been implemented. "Whenever a complaint is given, the sewer is cleaned and garbage is cleared, but the problem persists. During rains, sewage overflows and enters our homes," he lamented.
Official Response
A senior corporation official assured that UGD connections will be provided soon and that the Public Works Department (PWD) has been asked to address the open sewer issue. However, residents remain skeptical, as previous assurances have not led to lasting solutions.
