Lucknow: Sarojininagar MLA Rajeshwar Singh on Monday expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in student suicides across the country. Citing data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Singh revealed that 14,488 students died by suicide in India during 2024. He described these figures as "a serious warning for the future of the nation."
Causes of the Crisis
Singh attributed the crisis to mounting psychological pressure, academic stress, loneliness, fear of failure, cyber harassment, and unrealistic expectations faced by students. He noted that the increasingly competitive environment, shaped by artificial intelligence, automation, and social media comparisons, has exacerbated these issues.
Call for a Balanced Education System
The MLA emphasized that academic marks alone should not determine a child's worth. He called for a more balanced education system that prioritizes holistic development. Singh pointed to countries such as Japan, South Korea, Finland, Australia, and the United Kingdom, which have already prioritized youth mental health and adopted holistic education models.
Appeal to Parents and Schools
Appealing to parents, Singh stressed that children require emotional security and encouragement rather than constant performance pressure. He urged schools and colleges to strengthen counseling systems and promote extracurricular activities such as sports, arts, debates, yoga, and meditation as integral parts of education.
Message to Students
Addressing students directly, Singh said that a single examination or failure should never be viewed as the end of life. He encouraged them to seek help and remember that their worth extends beyond academic achievements.
