MP Kumari Selja Sounds Alarm on Haryana's Escalating Cancer Crisis

Sirsa Member of Parliament Kumari Selja has voiced profound apprehension regarding the swiftly mounting incidence of cancer across Haryana. Speaking on Saturday, she highlighted that alongside neighboring states Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, Haryana is progressively transforming into a region severely impacted by this devastating disease.

Alarming Mortality Statistics Revealed

Citing recent and distressing data, Kumari Selja disclosed that Punjab witnesses approximately 68 cancer-related fatalities each day, while Haryana records nearly 50 daily deaths attributable to cancer. These figures underscore a critical and escalating public health emergency that demands urgent attention.

Call for Comprehensive Government Policy

Selja emphasized the imperative for the government to formulate and implement a long-term, effective strategy. This policy must concentrate on pivotal areas including environmental conservation, securing clean water sources, rigorous pollution control measures, and substantial enhancements to healthcare infrastructure. She urged authorities to prioritize this issue and undertake immediate, concrete actions to safeguard the well-being of Haryana's residents.

Persistent Advocacy in Parliament

The MP revealed that she has consistently raised concerns about the surge in cancer cases within her parliamentary constituency of Sirsa and adjacent areas during parliamentary sessions. Despite her efforts to draw governmental focus to this grave matter, Selja alleged that the response has lacked the necessary seriousness and urgency required to address the problem effectively.

Ghaggar River Identified as Critical Hotspot

Kumari Selja pointed out a notable escalation in cancer diagnoses, particularly in villages situated along the Ghaggar River. She attributed this health risk to multiple factors:

  • Increasing pollution levels in the river
  • Deteriorating water quality
  • Discharge of untreated industrial effluents
  • Excessive utilization of pesticides in agriculture

She issued a stern warning, stating, "If these issues are not addressed in time, the situation could become even more severe in the coming years."

Demands for Immediate Remedial Measures

Selja called upon the government to execute decisive steps to mitigate pollution in the Ghaggar River and ensure its thorough cleansing. Additionally, she advocated for the establishment of advanced cancer treatment facilities and modern hospitals in cities proximate to the Ghaggar belt districts. Key locations mentioned include:

  1. Sirsa
  2. Fatehabad
  3. Jind
  4. Kaithal
  5. Ambala

This infrastructure development aims to enable patients to access timely and effective treatment locally, eliminating the need for arduous journeys to distant metropolitan centers.
