MSEDCL Installs Fibre Guards on Transformers in Nashik

Nashik: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has initiated a major safety drive in Nashik city and its surrounding areas. The utility is installing fibre protective guards around open distribution transformers located in busy residential and commercial zones.

Initiative Aims to Prevent Electrical Accidents

“While transformers are generally safe, close proximity can pose risks, especially in crowded areas where maintaining distance is not always possible. This initiative is aimed at securing sensitive locations and preventing potential electrical accidents, ensuring the safety of citizens, pedestrians and children,” a senior MSEDCL official stated.

In the first phase, protective fibre enclosures have been installed at over 80 locations across divisions 1 and 2 of Nashik city. The power utility plans to extend the initiative to all remaining high-traffic and vulnerable areas in a phased manner.

Vulnerable Areas Targeted

“Several transformers are situated near schools, colleges, markets, public parks and densely populated residential areas where heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement is common. In such locations, children playing nearby, daily commuters, and even stray or domestic animals are at risk of accidental contact with live electrical infrastructure,” the official explained.

The fibre enclosures serve as non-conductive barriers, preventing direct contact with transformers and high-voltage cables. They also provide enhanced safety during the monsoon season and in conditions of high moisture. The official highlighted that these installations are public property designed for community welfare.

Public Cooperation Sought

MSEDCL has urged residents to help maintain the enclosures. “Citizens are urged to avoid dumping garbage near the fenced areas, refrain from parking vehicles too close to the structures and ensure the installations are not damaged,” another official said.
