Mumbai experienced a brief respite from heavy rainfall on Tuesday, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the city and surrounding areas. In response, authorities ordered the closure of schools and colleges for the day to ensure public safety.
Orange Alert and Precautionary Measures
The IMD's orange alert signals the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, prompting the civic body to take preventive steps. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) advised residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
Local Train Services Restored
Rail services, which were disrupted due to waterlogging on tracks, began returning to normalcy overnight. The first local train from Virar to Churchgate departed at 3.57 am on Tuesday, according to Western Railway officials. Central Railway also reported gradual restoration of services, with trains running on most routes by morning.
Impact on Daily Life
The heavy rains had caused significant disruptions on Monday, with waterlogging reported in several parts of the city, including Hindmata, Dadar, and Sion. Vehicular movement was affected, and commuters faced long delays. However, the situation improved by Tuesday morning as rainfall intensity decreased.
Forecast and Advisory
The IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with intermittent rain for the next 48 hours. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Maharashtra coast. The BMC has set up control rooms and deployed pumps to quickly clear water from streets. Citizens are urged to stay updated through official channels and avoid spreading rumors.
